What You Need to Know about Overdrafts and Overdraft Fees

An overdraft occurs when you do not have enough money in your account to cover a transaction, but we pay it anyway. We can cover your overdrafts in two different ways:

1. We have standard overdraft practices that come with your account.
2. We also offer overdraft protection plans, such as a link to a savings account, which may be less expensive than our standard practices. The fee for each sweep transaction is $3.00. To learn more, ask us about these plans.

This notice explains our standard overdraft practices.

What are the standard overdraft practices that come with my account?
We do authorize and pay overdrafts for the following types of transactions:

  • Checks and other transactions made using your checking account number
  • Automatic bill payments

We do not authorize and pay overdrafts for the following types of transactions unless you ask us to (see below):

  • ATM transactions
  • Everyday debit card transactions

We pay overdrafts at our discretion, which means we do not guarantee that we will always authorize and pay any type of transaction.

If we do not authorize and pay an overdraft, your transaction will be declined.

What fees will I be charged if The Bank & Trust pays my overdraft?
Under our standard overdraft practices:

  • For each overdraft we pay into the overdraft, we will charge the standard per item overdraft fee set forth in our fee schedule in effect at the time of the overdraft (currently $32.00).
  • For personal accounts, we have a limit of 7 overdraft/returned item fees per business day, resulting in a daily maximum of $224.00 in overdraft/returned item fees. (Business accounts have no limit in fees.)
  • In addition, we will charge your account a per business day ‘‘extended overdraft fee’’ for personal accounts (currently $5.00) starting on the tenth business day your account is overdrawn and continuing for each subsequent consecutive business day your account remains overdrawn. There is no limit on the number of extended overdraft fees that may be assessed. (For business accounts, the extended overdraft fee is currently $10.00)
  • For personal accounts, we will not assess a fee for items if the payment of said items results in an overdrawn balance of $10.00 or less. (This does not apply for business accounts.)
  • All fees charged will increase the amount of the overdrawn balance.
  • The amounts of any overdrafts, including our fees, are due and payable immediately.
